Trifluoromethanesulfonamide
Molecular Formula: CH₂F₃NO₂S
CAS No.: 421-85-2
Trifluoromethanesulfonamide contains both a trifluoromethyl group (–CF₃) and a sulfonamide group (–SO₂NH–) in its molecular structure, which gives it unique chemical properties. Due to the strong electron-withdrawing effect of the trifluoromethanesulfonyl group, the amino group shows lower basicity and nucleophilicity compared with free alkyl amines. It can undergo condensation reactions with acyl chlorides and carboxylic acids, and can also be alkylated with methyl iodide.
Practical Applications
The main applications of Trifluoromethanesulfonamide are focused on organic synthesis intermediates and battery electrolyte additives, as detailed below:
1. Pharmaceutical & Fine Chemical Synthesis
It is used as a key intermediate for the synthesis of phospholipase A₂ (PLA₂) selective inhibitors, which are important in the development of drugs for inflammatory and metabolic diseases. It is also involved in the synthesis of eicosanoid-related and other bioactive molecules, supporting the development of high-potency and high-selectivity pharmaceuticals.
2. New Energy Battery Materials
When combined with ionic liquids, it is used to formulate high-voltage, high-stability electrolytes, improving power density and cycling durability.
As an electrolyte additive for lithium-ion and other secondary batteries, it can significantly enhance electrolyte performance, improving cycle stability, charge–discharge efficiency, and safety, and thereby extending battery life.
3. Other Organic Synthesis Applications
Thanks to its unique chemical properties, it is widely used in the synthesis of fluorinated organic compounds, including:
-
High-efficiency herbicides and fungicides
-
High-purity cleaning agents and photoresist additives for semiconductor manufacturing
-
Modification monomers for polyimides and fluoropolymers
-
Low-viscosity, high-conductivity ionic liquids
The expansion of its applications from traditional intermediates into new energy materials and high-end electronic chemicals has significantly increased the demand for high-purity and tightly controlled specifications, making this product highly attractive to downstream industries.
