Pharmacological Mechanisms and Properties

Antimalarial Mechanism: As a weak base, quinine can concentrate within the acidic food vacuoles of the malaria parasite, interfering with its hemoglobin digestion process. This leads to the accumulation of toxic heme, thereby killing the parasite. It is also lethal to the gametocytes of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium malariae.

Ion Channel Effects: Quinine is a known potassium channel blocker. Furthermore, it can reversibly inhibit gap junction channels formed by proteins such as connexin Cx36, which is significant for neuroelectric signal transmission research.
