II.Main Applications

Propylene Glycol is an extremely important chemical raw material and versatile solvent with a wide range of applications.
Food Industry:
    • Function: Used as a food additive (E1520), acting as a humectant, solvent, and stabilizer.
    • Applications: Found in baked goods, confectionery, beverages, etc., to retain moisture and softness; used as a solvent for flavorings, colors, and antioxidants.
Cosmetics & Personal Care:
    • Function: Primarily used as a humectant, emollient, solvent, and viscosity-decreasing agent.
    • Applications: Extensively used in toothpaste, shampoos, shower gels, lotions, creams, and makeup. It helps retain moisture, leaving skin feeling soft and smooth.
Pharmaceutical Industry:
    • Function: Serves as a solvent, carrier, and humectant for drugs.
    • Applications: Used in oral liquids, injectables (requiring high-purity pharmaceutical grade), topical ointments, and creams. It is a common excipient.
Industrial Applications:
    • Antifreeze and Heat Transfer Fluid: Due to its low freezing point, it’s used in automotive antifreeze, aircraft deicing fluids, and solar thermal systems. It is less toxic and more environmentally friendly than ethylene glycol.
    • Unsaturated Polyester Resin (UPR): A key raw material for producing UPR, which is used to make fiberglass-reinforced plastics (FRP) for automotive parts, bathtubs, tanks, etc.
    • Plasticizer: Used in cosmetics and food packaging materials.
    • Tobacco Industry: Acts as a humectant for tobacco.
    • Others: Used in paints, coatings, inks, etc.
