1.Ultraviolet absorbers

Ultraviolet absorbers are light stabilizers that absorb the ultraviolet portion of sunlight and fluorescent light sources without undergoing any changes themselves. They protect plastics from photo-oxidative degradation caused by UV exposure, thereby significantly extending the service life of the product. Plastics and other polymeric materials undergo auto-oxidation reactions under sunlight and fluorescent light due to UV radiation, leading to polymer degradation and deterioration, which degrades both appearance and mechanical properties. Adding UV absorbers selectively absorbs this high-energy UV radiation, converting it into harmless energy that is released or dissipated. Different types of polymers are degraded by UV light of different wavelengths. Different UV absorbers can absorb UV light of different wavelengths. When selecting a UV absorber, it is essential to choose one based on the type of polymer. UV absorbers should meet the following criteria: ① Strongly absorb UV light (especially wavelengths between 290-400 nm); ② Good thermal stability, remaining unchanged even during processing, with minimal thermal volatility; ③ Good chemical stability, not reacting adversely with the material components in the product; ④ Good miscibility, dispersing uniformly in the material without blooming or leaching; ⑤ Good photochemical stability of the absorber itself, not decomposing or discoloring; ⑥ Colorless, non-toxic, and odorless; ⑦ Resistant to washing; ⑧ Cost-effective and readily available. UV absorbers can be classified into the following categories based on their chemical structure: salicylate esters, benzophenones, benzotriazoles, substituted acrylonitriles, triazines, and others. UV absorbers are used in plastics, coatings, dyes, automotive windshields, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, sunscreens, and other applications.

2.Applications

UV absorber UV-9 is a broad-spectrum UV absorber with high absorption efficiency, non-toxicity, no teratogenic effects, and good stability to light and heat. It can absorb both UV-A and UV-B rays and is an FDA-approved Category I sunscreen agent, widely used in the United States and Europe. It is commonly found in sunscreen creams, creams, lotions, oils, and other sunscreen cosmetics. It can also serve as an anti-fading agent for products that change color due to light sensitivity. It is used in plastics, synthetic fibers, paints, and petroleum products, particularly suitable for light-colored transparent products. It can be used in paints and various plastic products, with particularly effective results for polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyester, acrylic, resins, polystyrene, and light-colored transparent furniture. It is also an excellent cosmetic additive. Usage: 0.1–0.5%. Cu(II) weight method determination reagent.
