| Application | Trimethylsulfoxonium iodide is used as a methylene transfer reagent in the synthesis of epoxides.
It is primarily employed in the synthesis of fluconazole. Under strong base treatment, it generates an ylide, which can undergo addition reactions with the carbonyl group of ketones and aldehydes to form epoxides. Alternatively, it may preferentially react with the double bond of α,β-unsaturated esters to yield cyclopropane esters. |
