Application 1 — Permanent Waving Lotions

This is the core application of the product. Acting as a reducing agent, it breaks the disulfide bonds in the hair, softening it and allowing it to be reshaped into curls. Due to its mild nature, it is widely used in “acid perms” or “cysteine perms” that cause less damage to the hair.

Application 2 — Hair Straightening Creams

In the hair straightening process, a reducing agent is also required to open the disulfide bond structure of the hair. Glycerol Monomercaptoacetate helps smooth out frizzy and curly hair, leaving it straight while better maintaining the hair’s natural shine compared to strong alkaline products.

Application 3 — Depilatory Creams

Utilizing its sulfhydryl (-SH) groups to disrupt the disulfide bonds in hair keratin, this product can also be used in depilatory creams to weaken the hair structure, making it easy to wipe off the skin surface. Its low-irritation characteristic makes it suitable for body care products.

Application 4 — pH Adjustment and Buffer Systems in Personal Care

Because its 10% aqueous solution is weakly acidic (pH 2.0-3.5), it not only serves as an active ingredient in formulations but also assists in adjusting the pH of the system to a weakly acidic range suitable for the scalp environment, thereby reducing the irritation of chemical treatments.

Application 5 — Organic Synthesis Intermediates

Beyond the personal care sector, as a compound containing both active sulfhydryl and hydroxyl groups, it serves as an important intermediate in organic synthesis. It can be used to synthesize other sulfur-containing compounds, polymer modifiers, or specific pharmaceutical intermediates (such as precursors for certain antibiotics or enzyme inhibitors).
