Frequently Asked Questions:
Question 1: What are the production sources for D-Glucosamine hydrochloride? And how do these sources differ?
D-Glucosamine Hydrochloride (CAS 66-84-2) is commercially produced through two principal routes: corn-based fermentation and shellfish-derived chitin hydrolysis.
Corn-based fermentation begins with glucose derived from non-GMO corn, which serves as the carbohydrate feedstock. We mainly offer the source from Corn-based fermentation that is from Plant-Origin.
A patented microbial fermentation process — often using engineered microorganisms such as Escherichia coli or Aspergillus niger — converts the glucose into glucosamine, which is subsequently converted to its hydrochloride salt form.
This route is entirely shellfish-free and vegan, making it suitable for individuals with shellfish allergies.
Shellfish-derived production involves extracting chitin from crustacean exoskeletons (shrimp, crab, or lobster shells) through demineralization and deproteinization, followed by acid hydrolysis —
typically using concentrated hydrochloric acid at elevated temperatures — to cleave the chitin polymer into D-glucosamine, which is then crystallized as the hydrochloride salt.

Question 2: What pharmacopeia standards does this product meet?
D-Glucosamine Hydrochloride could meet USP quality standards. The USP monograph defines quality purely by physicochemical criteria, irrespective of the starting material. Key requirements include:
Parameter USP Specification
Assay (C₆H₁₃NO₅·HCl, dried basis) 98.0% – 102.0%
Specific rotation +70.0° to +73.0°
pH (20 mg/mL solution) 3.0 – 5.0
Loss on drying (105°C, 2 h) ≤ 1.0%
Residue on ignition ≤ 0.1%
Sulfate ≤ 0.24%

Question 3: What is the Biological Activity and Mechanism of Action for this product?
Glucosamine hydrochloride’s primary biological role is as a precursor for the synthesis of GAGs and proteoglycans, which are critical components of articular cartilage.
Chondroprotective Effects: It provides the necessary substrate for chondrocytes to synthesize the structural components of the cartilage matrix, helping to maintain its integrity and shock-absorbing properties.
Anti-inflammatory Activity: Glucosamine has been shown to exert anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting inflammatory signaling pathways
Application 1: What is the main application in health-care?
D-(+)-Glucosamine hydrochloride is utilized primarily within the healthcare and nutraceutical sectors, especially for joint health.
Applied in dietary supplements to support joint function and relieve osteoarthritis symptoms by facilitating cartilage repair through its role in glycosaminoglycan synthesis.
Frequently used in conjunction with chondroitin sulfate to enhance efficacy in managing joint-related discomfort, addressing both lubrication and shock absorption functions.
Ideal for topical formulations targeting joint pain, as it may improve localized delivery of nutrients necessary for joint health, thereby enhancing patient comfort.

Application 2: What are the Applications in Research and Drug Development?
Glucosamine hydrochloride is widely used as a dietary supplement for joint health, particularly for managing the symptoms of osteoarthritis.
In research, it serves as a tool to investigate cartilage biology, inflammatory processes, and the mechanisms of chondroprotection.
Its effects on various signaling pathways make it a compound of interest for studying cellular metabolism and proliferation.
Application 3: Besides joint supplements, I've noticed glucosamine HCl showing up in face creams and moisturizers — what is it actually doing for Skin-care?
Glucosamine hydrochloride is an amino sugar that serves as a precursor to hyaluronic acid — the same molecule dermatologists inject as filler and that your skin naturally produces to stay plump and hydrated.
When applied topically, it acts as a humectant and conditioning agent, helping the skin retain water and supporting a more even-looking tone.
The mechanism is fairly straightforward: glucosamine is a building block for glycosaminoglycans, which are the water-binding molecules in your skin's extracellular matrix.
By supplying the raw material, topical glucosamine may help support the skin's own hyaluronic acid production.
