Eugenol is a naturally occurring phenolic compound with the molecular formula C₁₀H₁₂O₂ and a molecular weight of 164.2 g/mol. It is a colorless to pale yellow oily liquid with a distinctive clove-like aroma and mild spicy flavor. Eugenol is the main component of clove oil, and is also found in cinnamon, nutmeg, basil, and bay leaves. Thanks to its powerful antiseptic, analgesic, and aromatic properties, eugenol is widely used in the flavor, fragrance, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and dental industries.

🦷 Dental & Pharmaceutical Applications

Eugenol has long been used in dentistry for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. It is commonly found in:

  • Temporary dental fillings

  • Toothache relief gels and clove oil formulations

  • Mouthwashes and antiseptic rinses

In pharmaceuticals, eugenol may be used in topical pain relief ointments, herbal capsules, and anti-inflammatory preparations.

🍬 Food & Flavor Industry

Eugenol serves as a natural flavoring agent in:

  • Baked goods and spice blends

  • Chewing gums, candies, and syrups

  • Herbal teas and liqueurs

Its warm, spicy-sweet clove flavor enhances both sweet and savory formulations. It is classified as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) by food safety authorities when used in regulated amounts.

🌸 Fragrance & Cosmetics

Due to its unique spicy-floral aroma, eugenol is used as a fragrance ingredient in:

  • Perfumes and colognes

  • Soaps and body washes

  • Creams, lotions, and deodorants

It brings depth to floral and oriental scent profiles and serves as a bridge between top and base notes. It is also valued in natural and aromatherapy-based product lines.

🧪 Industrial & Chemical Uses

Eugenol acts as a building block in organic synthesis, used to manufacture:

  • Vanillin (synthetic vanilla)

  • Antioxidants (such as BHA analogs)

  • Insect repellents and preservatives

It also functions as a stabilizer in certain plastic and rubber products.

⚠️ Storage & Handling

Eugenol should be stored in airtight containers, in a cool, dark, and well-ventilated area. Due to its phenolic structure, it is sensitive to oxidation and should be protected from light and air exposure.
