In medicinal chemistry, this compound is primarily used to construct asymmetric α-substituted sulfone structures. Leveraging the strong electron-withdrawing effect of the sulfone group, researchers can efficiently introduce various alkyl or aryl groups at the benzylic position (i.e., the carbon adjacent to the benzene ring), enabling rapid synthesis of a series of derivatives for biological activity screening. In addition, the sulfone group often serves as a “linker” or “prodrug modification moiety” to improve the water solubility or metabolic stability of drug candidate molecules, which is particularly common in the early-stage discovery of antitumor and antiviral agents.
The molecular structure contains two benzene rings and a polar sulfone group, imparting a certain rigid conformation and dielectric properties. In materials chemistry, it can be used as a side-chain modifier for synthesizing organic optoelectronic materials (e.g., hole transport materials) or high-temperature engineering plastic monomers (e.g., polysulfone-based oligomers), helping to tune the glass transition temperature (Tg) or refractive index of polymeric materials.
Due to its relatively simple structure and good crystallinity, this compound is occasionally used as an internal standard or method validation reference in liquid chromatography (HPLC) or mass spectrometry (MS), to calibrate instrument response for sulfur-containing aromatic compounds. Additionally, it appears as a model substrate in the supplementary materials of academic papers, particularly in studies investigating the mechanism of sulfur ylide reactions.
