Introduction;
Decanoic acid is a byproduct of the hydrolysis of lauric oil, coconut oil, or litsea cubeba oil to produce lauric acid. It is mainly used to produce decanoic acid esters, which are used as flavorings, humectants, plasticizers, and food additives.
Uses;
Decanoic acid is a medium-chain saturated fatty acid, found in small amounts in cow’s and sheep’s milk, and relatively abundant in tropical oils such as coconut oil (decanoic acid content approximately 8%) and palm kernel oil (decanoic acid content approximately 9%). Decanoic acid and its esters are mainly used in the food, plastics additives, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, chemicals, and aerospace industries. It can be used as a flavoring agent for dairy products, rum, and brandy, as a food additive, lubricant, humectant, plasticizer, foaming agent, rust inhibitor, polymer modifier, high and low temperature special oil, and aviation fuel, with a wide range of applications and a very optimistic market prospect.
Toxicity;
Natural fatty acid, non-toxic. Safe for use in food (FDA, §172.860.2000)
