📚Product Basic Information

Tetradecyl glycidyl ether, also known as Butyl Glycidyl Ether (abbreviated as BGE), is also called Active Diluent 501, butoxy methyl ethylene oxide, and propylene oxide butyl ether. Its molecular formula is C₇H₁₄O₂, with a molecular weight of 130.18, and the EINECS number is 219-376-4. This product is a high-risk chemical and has been included in the carcinogen list of California’s Proposition 65. During transportation, it belongs to the 3rd class of dangerous goods (UN 3271).

🔬Physical and chemical properties

Tetradecyl glycidyl ether is a colorless and transparent liquid at room temperature and has a distinctive odor. It has an extremely low viscosity, approximately 1 to 5 mPa·s at 25°C. This property makes it an excellent diluent.
The main physical parameters are as follows: density is approximately 0.91 – 0.92 g/cm³ (at 25°C), boiling point is 164 – 166°C, and flash point is about 59°C. This product is soluble in various organic solvents such as ethanol, acetone, and benzene, and is slightly soluble in water.

🎯Main application

1.Epoxy resin activator diluent
This is the most important and widespread application of n-butyl glycidyl ether. As a single-functional epoxy reactive diluent, it can significantly reduce the viscosity of the epoxy resin system, improve the leveling property during construction and the operability. Due to the presence of ether bonds and epoxy groups in its molecular structure, it can participate in the cross-linking reaction during the curing process of epoxy resin, forming a uniform curing system. Unlike non-reactive diluents, it does not volatilize and escape. The general addition amount is 10-15% of the resin weight, which can effectively improve the flexibility, impact resistance and bending resistance of the cured product.
2. Application in the Electronic and Electrical Industry
Isobutyl glycidyl ether is widely used in the encapsulation, casting and insulation impregnation processes of electronic components. By reducing the viscosity of the epoxy resin system, it ensures the good permeability of the impregnating solution and enhances the toughness and reliability of the insulation products.
3. Paints and Adhesives
In the preparation of solvent-free coatings and adhesives, this product is used as an active diluent, which can reduce the viscosity of the system, improve the leveling and wetting properties, and simultaneously enhance the adhesion and moisture resistance of the paint film.
4. Organic synthetic intermediates
By taking advantage of the ring-opening reaction property of its epoxy groups, n-butyl glycidyl ether can be used to synthesize fine chemicals such as nonionic surfactants, dye dispersants, crosslinking agents, etc. It can also be used as an acid acceptor in chlorination solvent stabilizers.
5. Modification of Polymer Materials
Tetradecyl glycidyl ether can be used for the hydrophobic modification of natural high-molecular substances such as cellulose, starch, and chitosan, to prepare functional materials with temperature responsiveness. In the field of polymer synthesis, it can also be used as a stabilizer and plasticizer for polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
6. Textile Additives
This product can be used as a surface modifier and dye enhancer for cotton or wool fabrics, improving the dyeing performance and surface properties of the fabrics.

📦Storage conditions

Tetradecyl glycidyl ether is a flammable liquid with a flash point lower than 60°C. It should be kept away from fire sources and heat sources. This substance is skin irritant and allergenic, and may cause skin allergic reactions. It is also irritating to the eyes.
When storing, it should be sealed and kept in a cool, dry and well-ventilated warehouse. Avoid prolonged exposure to the air. It is recommended to keep the storage temperature below 15°C and the shelf life is 12 months.
During the transportation process, this product was classified as UN 3271 (Class 3 Flammable Liquids), with a packaging level of III, and it is necessary to comply with the relevant regulations for the transportation of dangerous goods.
