3,4-Dichloro-1-butene, with CAS Number 760-23-6. Its molecular formula is C₄H₆Cl₂, and its molecular weight is 124.99 g/mol. This product is a colorless to pale yellow clear liquid, commonly available in purity grades of 98% or higher.
This compound is also known as 1,2-dichlorobut-3-ene, with the linear molecular formula ClCH₂CH(Cl)CH=CH₂.
3,4-Dichloro-1-butene is a volatile liquid with the following key physical properties:
Melting point: approximately -61°C; boiling point: approximately 122–123°C (at atmospheric pressure). At 25°C, the density is approximately 1.15–1.16 g/mL, and the refractive index is approximately 1.4658 (20°C). The flash point is 28°C (closed cup), classifying it as a flammable liquid. The vapor density is 4.31 (air = 1), and the vapor pressure is 17 mmHg (25°C).
This compound is soluble in organic solvents such as methanol, diethyl ether, and ethanol; its solubility in water is approximately 1,100 mg/L (25°C).
Synthesis of Chloroprene (Chloroprene Monomer): The primary downstream application of 3,4-dichloro-1-butene is as a raw material for the synthesis of chloroprene. Through a dehydrochlorination reaction, 3,4-dichloro-1-butene can be converted into chloroprene, which is then polymerized to form chloroprene rubber (polychloroprene). Due to its excellent chemical resistance and durability, chloroprene is widely used in adhesives, coatings, seals, and other applications.
Organic Synthesis Intermediates: This compound can also serve as a synthesis intermediate for other chlorinated compounds and fine chemicals (such as dyes and pesticides).
Hazard Classification and UN Number: 3,4-Dichloro-1-butene is classified as a dangerous good. UN numbers listed in different databases may vary slightly, but primarily include UN2924 (flammable liquid, corrosive, Packing Group III) and UN2920 (corrosive liquid, Packing Group II). It is recommended to refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the specific batch of the product.
Major Hazards: This product is a flammable liquid with a flash point of 28°C. It may ignite when exposed to open flames, high heat, or strong oxidizing agents. It is also corrosive and can cause severe skin burns and eye damage. Harmful if swallowed or inhaled.
Transportation Conditions: When exporting this product as a chemical trading company, packaging and declaration must comply with dangerous goods transportation regulations. It is typically transported at ambient temperature, but containers must be kept tightly sealed and kept away from heat sources and open flames. The use of explosion-proof equipment and measures to prevent static discharge are recommended.
