Detailed Functions and Mechanism of Action
(1)Promotes Rooting: This is the most common and significant use of NAA. It stimulates the formation of adventitious roots at the base of cuttings, greatly improving the success rate of vegetative propagation.
(2)Prevents Fruit Drop: NAA regulates hormonal balance to inhibit the formation of an abscission layer, effectively preventing the premature dropping of flowers and fruits, thereby increasing fruit set.
(3)Thins Flowers and Fruits: the effect is concentration-dependent: low concentrations promote growth, while high concentrations inhibit it. This principle is used for thinning flowers and fruits by applying higher concentrations at specific times, allowing the remaining fruits to develop better and grow larger.
(4)Regulates Growth: It promotes cell division and expansion and can be used to stimulate stem elongation in some contexts. Conversely, it can also suppress bud sprouting (e.g., inhibiting potatoes from sprouting during storage).
(5)Induces Parthenocarpy: Application of NAA can stimulate ovary development without pollination, leading to the formation of seedless fruits.
Mechanism of Action: As an auxin analog, NAA works by influencing gene expression, cell division and elongation, and the transport of materials within the plant.
Primary Uses
(1)Agriculture:
  • Fruit Trees: Used for fruit thinning or improving fruit retention in apples, pears, grapes, etc.
  • Field Crops: Applied to crops like rice to enhance tillering and grain filling.
(2)Horticulture and Forestry:
  • Cutting Propagation: Used for rooting cuttings of forest trees and ornamental plants. It is a key ingredient in many commercial “rooting powders.”
(3)Plant Tissue Culture: Added in small amounts to culture media, often in combination with cytokinins, to induce callus formation, adventitious roots, and shoots from explants.
(4)Post-Harvest Preservation: Sprayed on harvested fruits and vegetables to delay senescence and maintain freshness.
