Prebiotic Effects

Lactulose is one of the earliest recognized prebiotics, capable of selectively stimulating the growth and activity of beneficial bacteria in the gut (particularly Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli). Daily intake of 5-20 grams of lactulose for several weeks can increase the population of Bifidobacteria in the intestine by 10 to 100 times. This prebiotic effect is particularly important for formula-fed infants, as human milk contains natural bifidogenic factors, which are lacking in cow’s milk. Adding lactulose to infant formula can make the gut microbiota of formula-fed infants similar to that of breastfed infants, enhancing immunity and promoting growth and development in infants and young children.

The prebiotic mechanism of lactulose lies in the fact that most beneficial bacteria produce β-galactosidase, an enzyme that can break down lactulose for energy, while most harmful bacteria lack this enzyme. By promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria, lactulose indirectly inhibits the proliferation of harmful bacteria, maintaining the balance of the intestinal microecology.
