Aqueous extracts from the root of kava has been used for centuries in the South Pacific. The pharmacologically active compounds are the kava lactones, which allegedly possess analgesic, anticonvulsive, spasmolytic, and antimycotic effects.
In Western countries, organic kava extracts have gained popularity in the twentieth century as herbal supplements for treating anxiety and insomnia.

Kava extract is primarily used for its calming and relaxing effects. It is widely applied in:

  1. Dietary supplements and herbal preparations – as a natural remedy to relieve stress, anxiety, and insomnia.

  2. Pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products – used for its anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) and sedative properties.

  3. Functional beverages – added to drinks marketed for relaxation, mood enhancement, and stress relief.

  4. Cosmetic formulations – sometimes used in soothing or anti-stress skincare products due to its calming effects on the skin.
