Applications of Hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D3, CAS: 541-05-9)

Hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane features high ring tension and far higher ring-opening polymerization activity than D4 and D5. It is a core intermediate for high-end organosilicone materials. Controlled polymers with tailored structures can be prepared via anionic or cationic ring-opening polymerization, widely applied as synthetic raw materials in industrial manufacturing, electronics, medical care, textiles, daily chemicals and scientific research synthesis.

1. Synthesis of Organosilicone Polymers (Core Application)

1.1 Raw material for methyl vinyl silicone rubber / high-temperature vulcanized (HTV) silicone rubber base polymer

It is used to synthesize high-molecular-weight methyl vinyl silicone rubber with excellent high/low temperature resistance, insulation and anti-aging properties, applied in automotive seals, wire & cable insulation, aerospace sealing parts and household appliance gaskets. It also acts as a structure control agent to prevent rubber hardening during storage and improve processing stability.

1.2 Synthesis of special silicone oils

It is adopted to produce low-viscosity hydroxyl silicone oil and modified silicone oils (amino-modified, epoxy-modified, polyether-modified silicone oil), which feature low freezing point, low surface tension and stable viscosity-temperature performance. They serve as release agents, lubricants, defoamers and flow aids for plastic processing.

1.3 Monomer for silicone resin, liquid silicone rubber (LSR) and addition-cured silicone gel

It precisely controls the molecular weight distribution of polymers to produce highly transparent and tough electronic potting adhesives, medical silicone gels, thermal conductive silicone gels and dielectric elastomers (flexible driving materials for artificial muscles).

1.4 Block and special organosilicone copolymers

It is used in laboratories and fine chemical industry to synthesize narrow-distribution polydimethylsiloxane for precision coatings and PDMS substrates of microfluidic chips.

2. Surface Modification of Powders, Fillers & Materials

2.1 Hydrophobic modifier for inorganic fillers

It performs silylation coating on fumed silica, calcium carbonate, aluminum hydroxide, glass powder and ceramic powder to enhance compatibility between fillers and plastics/rubbers, reduce oil absorption value and improve powder fluidity. Widely used in flame-retardant plastics and silicone rubber reinforcement systems.

2.2 Intermediate for hydrophobic and anti-fouling treatment of glass, metal and fabrics

After hydrolysis, it generates silanol and forms dense hydrophobic silicon film on substrate surfaces, applicable to waterproof fabrics, architectural waterproof coatings, anti-rust and release coatings for metals.

3. Textile Printing & Dyeing Industry

Hydroxyl silicone oil and textile softeners synthesized from D3 endow fabrics with smoothness, antistatic property, waterproof breathability and wash-resistant hand feel, suitable for post-finishing of chemical fibers, cotton, linen and non-woven fabrics. It also works as a raw material for textile defoamers.

4. Electronics, Electrical Appliances & Semiconductors

4.1 Precursor of high-purity insulating silicon thin film

It is applied in PECVD plasma deposition of ultra-thin insulating silicon thin films for chips, microfluidic chips and dielectric layers of flexible electronics, with low electric leakage, temperature resistance and biocompatibility.

4.2 Raw material for electronic potting and thermal conductive encapsulant

It synthesizes high-purity low-volatility silicone potting adhesives for insulation and sealing of power supplies, LEDs and sensors. High-purity D3 matches silicone materials supporting semiconductor chips.

4.3 Raw material for high-temperature resistant silicone elastomers of new energy wire harnesses

Used in power battery wiring harnesses and photovoltaic cables.

5. Biomedicine & Medical Devices

5.1 Raw material for biocompatible PDMS

Polymerized into medical-grade silicone elastomers for catheters, medical gaskets, implant prostheses and contact lens substrates. Microfluidic chips made from it are used for in-vitro diagnosis, cell culture and high-throughput drug screening.

5.2 Silicon coating for transdermal patches and wound dressings

It forms mild silicon substrates with biological inertness and non-irritation, acting as raw materials for controlled drug sustained-release carriers.

5.3 Monomer for silicone oil pharmaceutical excipients

6. Daily Chemical & Personal Care

It is used to synthesize cosmetic-grade volatile and modified silicone oils, serving as smoothing agents for skin care lotions, hair conditioners and color cosmetics. High-purity D3 produces low-irritation film-forming silicone raw materials for skin care products (compliant high-purity grade).

7. Coatings, Adhesives & Sealants

7.1 Monomer for high-temperature resistant and anti-corrosion organosilicone coating resins

7.2 Base polymer raw material for neutral silicone sealants and organosilicone pressure-sensitive adhesives

7.3 Stock solution intermediate for long-term release agents of plastics and metals

8. Organic Synthesis & Laboratory Reagents for Scientific Research

8.1 Trapping agent for active silicon intermediates

It captures transient active species such as silicones and silylenes for research on organosilicone reaction mechanisms and synthesis of special silicon reagents.

8.2 Building block for organic synthesis

It produces fine silicon chemicals including dimethylsilanol and dimethoxydimethylsilane. As a standard monomer for anionic polymerization, it is adopted in experiments of polymerization kinetics and polydimethylsiloxane structure research.

9. Other Industrial Applications

9.1 Plastic processing additives: improve demolding, lubrication and scratch resistance of polyolefin and engineering plastics

9.2 Defoaming system intermediate: organosilicone defoamer raw material for industrial water treatment, coatings and fermentation industries

9.3 Aerospace & military industry: core raw material for special silicone elastomers and sealing materials resistant to extreme high and low temperatures and weathering
