EGTA (ethylene glycol bis (2-aminoethyl ether) tetraacetic acid | CAS 67-42-5): a highly selective calcium ion chelating agent that assists in biological research and analytical detection

一、Product Introduction

EGTA, Ethylenebis (oxyethylenetrilo) tetraacetic acid, also known as ethylene glycol bis (2-aminoethyl ether) tetraacetic acid, is an important metal ion chelating agent for amino polycarboxylates. As an indispensable reagent in the fields of analytical chemistry and life sciences, EGTA is highly favored by researchers due to its unique high selective chelating ability for calcium ions (Ca ² ⁺).

二、EGTA vs. EDTA: Why choose EGTA?

Although EGTA functions similarly to the commonly used chelating agent EDTA, it has a key advantage: it has extremely high selectivity for calcium ions (Ca ² ⁺). Research has shown that the complex formed by EGTA with calcium ions is about 100000 times more stable than the complex formed with magnesium ions (Mg ² ⁺). This characteristic makes it the preferred reagent for measuring calcium ion concentration in the presence of magnesium ions.

三、Core application areas

1. Biology and Biochemistry Research

Calcium ion concentration regulation: EGTA is widely used in the preparation of calcium buffer solutions to precisely control the calcium ion concentration inside and outside cells and in reaction systems. It is a key tool for studying the role of calcium ions in physiological processes such as cell signaling, muscle contraction, and neurotransmitter release.

Cell culture: In cell biology experiments, it is used to regulate the level of calcium ions in the culture medium to study processes such as cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis.

Enzyme activity research: It can be used as a metalloproteinase inhibitor to effectively chelate heavy metal ions and eliminate their interference with enzyme activity. Meanwhile, EGTA is also a commonly used inhibitor of alkaline phosphatase activity in ELISA experiments.

2. Analytical Chemistry

Complexation titration: As an excellent chelating agent and masking agent, EGTA can be used for the determination of trace metal ions in volumetric and photometric analysis. It can complexly titrate calcium and can also be used to titrate metal ions such as barium, strontium, copper, magnesium, and zinc.

3. Other applications

Blood anticoagulant: EGTA can chelate calcium ions in the blood, playing an anticoagulant role. In specific research scenarios, use at a ratio of 1 g EGTA per 100 mL of blood.

Molecular Biology: Can be used as a component of RNA deoxygenation sequencing buffer in RNA reverse transcriptase.

四、Product advantages and usage instructions

1. High purity: Our EGTA products have a purity of ≥ 99.0%, meeting the rigorous experimental requirements from analytical purity to molecular biology level.

2.Usage tip: EGTA has poor solubility in ordinary water. The recommended preparation method is to weigh the required amount of EGTA and dissolve it in deionized water. While stirring, slowly add NaOH to adjust the pH to about 8.0. After it is completely dissolved, make up to volume

五、Storage and Transportation

Storage conditions: It is recommended to seal and store in a dry, cool room temperature environment to avoid moisture
