September 23, 2026

Product Overview:

Bis[4-(2-phenyl-2-propyl)phenyl]amine (CAS: 10081-67-1), also known as Antioxidant KY-405 or AO-405, is a high-molecular-weight aromatic amine antioxidant. Its key features include low staining (suitable for light-colored and colored products), low volatility (high retention during high-temperature processing for long-lasting protection), and good synergy with sulfur-containing antioxidants. It is mainly used in natural and synthetic rubbers (especially in chloroprene colored cable sheaths), polyolefins, polyurethanes, and lubricating oils to protect against thermal, photo-, and ozone-induced aging.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What type of antioxidant is this product? What are its core features?

This product is a highly efficient non-staining amine antioxidant, structurally classified as a “hindered diphenylamine derivative” — a secondary amine NH flanked by two phenyl rings each bearing a para-position α,α-dimethylbenzyl (cumyl) group. Its core advantage is that it combines two properties that are typically difficult to achieve simultaneously: the high activity of amine antioxidants and non-staining, non-discoloring performance. It is particularly suitable for light-colored and vivid rubber/plastic products with strict color requirements.

Q2: What rubber and plastic types is it mainly suitable for?

It covers a very broad range of rubbers: natural rubber (NR), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), butadiene rubber (BR), isoprene rubber (IR), chloroprene rubber (CR), butyl rubber (IIR), EPDM, nitrile rubber (NBR), hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR), acrylate rubber (AEM, ACM), etc. For plastics, it can be used in polyolefins (PE, PP), polyurethane foams, polyamides, as well as rubber-plastic wire and cable and adhesives.

Q3: What is the practical significance of “non-staining, non-discoloring”?

Traditional diphenylamine antioxidants (such as Antioxidant A, Antioxidant D), although highly active, undergo color migration and contact contamination during thermal aging, causing light-colored or vivid products to yellow and darken. The two cumyl groups (α,α-dimethylbenzyl) in this product’s structure create significant steric hindrance that prevents the migration of oxidation products — this is why it can be used in white sports shoe soles, children’s toy rubber, colored cable sheaths, and other products with extremely sensitive color requirements, and contact migration will not contaminate adjacent materials.

Q4: What are the storage conditions and shelf life?

Store at room temperature in a sealed, light-protected, cool, and dry place; keep away from heat sources, open flames, and strong oxidants. Due to its high molecular weight and low volatility, it has good stability under normal storage conditions, with a shelf life of 12 months. Before reusing product beyond the shelf life, the initial melting point and appearance should be re-tested.

Application Cases

Case 1: Light-Colored Rubber Soles and Sports Equipment

This product is a preferred antioxidant for light-colored rubber products, providing efficient thermal-oxidative protection while avoiding color contamination. Its bulky cumyl structure effectively inhibits the migration of oxidation products, making it suitable for white sports shoe soles, children’s shoes, colored rubber racket grips, TPE toys, and other applications with strict color fastness requirements. When combined with sulfur-containing antioxidants, it significantly extends color retention under outdoor exposure.

Case 2: EPDM/NBR High-Temperature Seals

Particularly suitable for EPDM, NBR, HNBR, AEM, ACM and other rubber seals with high heat requirements, offering triple protection against thermal-oxidative aging, ozone, and flex cracking. When synergized with sulfur-containing antioxidants, it significantly extends thermal-oxidative aging life while delaying ozone cracking. It is compatible with carbon black, silica, and plasticizers, and is widely used in automotive weatherstrips, oil seals, O-rings, and similar components.

Case 3: Colored Chloroprene Cable Sheaths

In colored chloroprene (CR) wire and cable sheaths, this product significantly improves thermal aging performance without causing color migration. Its structure contains no exposed aromatic rings that could oxidize to form chromophores, allowing it to maintain the color fastness of red, orange, green, and other vivid sheaths. It is commonly used in colored sheaths for mining, marine, and wind power cables.

Case 4: Polyolefin (PE/PP) Processing Stabilizer

Used as an auxiliary antioxidant in polyolefin processing, it significantly improves melt stability and long-term thermal-oxidative stability when combined with hindered phenolic primary antioxidants. It is typically used in a ternary system with a primary antioxidant and a phosphite, suitable for film products requiring multiple recycling cycles, fiber-grade PP filaments, HDPE pipes, etc. Not recommended for transparent PP products requiring FDA food-contact certification.

Case 5: Polyurethane Foam Scorch Inhibitor

In the production of flexible and rigid polyurethane foams, it effectively prevents “scorch” — yellowing and degradation at the core of large foam blocks caused by excessive exothermic heat. Its high molecular weight and high thermal decomposition temperature allow it to remain active throughout the foaming process. It is commonly used in automotive seat foam, furniture cushioning, and insulation rigid foam boards.

Case 6: Hot-Melt and Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive Antioxidant

Used as an auxiliary antioxidant in EVA-based, SBC-based, and SIS/SBS-based hot-melt and pressure-sensitive adhesives, it significantly improves yellowing resistance and bonding durability. When combined with hindered phenols, it extends the color fastness of transparent tapes and white labels. It is often used to replace BHT in hygiene product adhesives, offering better persistence due to its higher molecular weight and lower volatility.
