Antibacterial Spectrum and Clinical Applicability

The “broad-spectrum” characteristic of ampicillin sodium is its greatest clinical advantage. It not only retains the potent activity of penicillin against most Gram-positive cocci (such as Streptococcus hemolyticus and Streptococcus pneumoniae), but also expands coverage to include certain Gram-negative bacilli, including Haemophilus influenzaeEscherichia coli, and Proteus mirabilis, among others. It is also the first-line or preferred drug for the treatment of infections caused by Enterococcus and Listeria species. Based on these properties, it is widely used in clinical practice to treat respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal infections, meningitis, and septicemia. Of note, ampicillin sodium is ineffective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) that produces penicillinase, which reveals the first major limitation of its application.
