Applications

5-Fluorocytosine, besides being an antibacterial drug, is also a major intermediate in the preparation of capecitabine. Capecitabine inhibits cell division and interferes with RNA and protein synthesis. It is an antimetabolite of fluoropyrimidine deoxynucleoside carbamates that can be converted into 5-FU in vivo, primarily used to treat colorectal cancer, colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, metastatic breast cancer, and other tumors.

Adverse Reactions
5-Fluorocytosine may cause adverse reactions such as nausea, vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, rash, fever, anemia, elevated transaminases, and cytopenia and thrombocytopenia. Cholestasis of blood cell and platelet counts are observed, and occasionally liver necrosis, pancytopenia, bone marrow suppression, and aplastic anemia may occur.

Chemical Properties
White or off-white crystalline powder, odorless or slightly odorous. Slightly soluble in water (1.2% at 20°C), slightly soluble in ethanol; practically insoluble in chloroform and ether; readily soluble in dilute hydrochloric acid or dilute sodium hydroxide solution. Stable at room temperature, it crystallizes upon cooling and partially transforms into 5-fluorouracil upon heating.

 

Uses:

Antifungal drug. Primarily used for cutaneous and mucosal candidiasis, candidal endocarditis, candidal arthritis, cryptococcal meningitis, and chromomycosis. Regular blood counts should be performed during treatment. Use with caution in patients with hepatic or renal insufficiency, hematologic disorders, and pregnant women; contraindicated in patients with severe renal insufficiency.

Uses:

This product is used abroad as the first-line treatment for severe systemic Candida albicans and Cryptococcus infections [included in the United States Pharmacopeia (19th edition)], and for the treatment of fungal meningitis, fungal respiratory infections, and ichthyosis.

Uses:

Antifungal drug with good inhibitory effects on Candida, Cryptococcus, and Geotrichum; also effective against some Aspergillus species, as well as Cladosporium and pyloric fungi that cause dermatophytes. It has no effect on other fungi and bacteria. Uses include research on the biosynthesis of trimethoprim (TMP). It is also used to treat fungal infections caused by Cryptococcus and Candida, such as fungal sepsis, endocarditis, meningitis, and lung and urinary tract infections.
