📊Synthesis and Source

BAMF is primarily produced from the biomass platform chemical 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) via reductive amination. As a bio-based fine chemical, it belongs to the family of high-value-added HMF derivatives, alongside furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) and tetrahydrofuran dimethanol (THFDM).

🧩Application of 2,5-Bis(aminomethyl)furan/BAMF CAS No.: 2213-51-6

1. Bio-based Polyamides (Nylon) and High-performance Fibers

As a diamine monomer, BAMF polycondenses with dicarboxylic acids (such as adipic acid and FDCA) to produce bio-based polyamides, or modifies existing nylons (e.g., PA6, PA66), enhancing the material’s heat resistance, mechanical properties, and biodegradability. It has the potential to replace m-xylylenediamine in the development of high-performance fibers such as bio-based aramids, balancing strength and sustainability.

2. Polyurethane (PU) and Polyurea Materials

As a chain extender/crosslinking agent, BAMF participates in reactions with isocyanate systems to prepare bio-based polyurethane elastomers, coatings, adhesives, and foam materials. The furan ring structure endows the materials with excellent heat and chemical resistance, making them suitable for high-end industrial coatings, structural adhesives, and flexible products.

3. Epoxy Resin Curing Agents

The primary amine groups undergo ring-opening reactions with epoxy groups, allowing BAMF to serve as a curing agent for epoxy resins. It is suitable for high-performance composites, electronic encapsulation, and adhesives, with the cured products offering both strength and temperature resistance.

4. Fine Chemicals and Pharmaceutical/Pesticide Intermediates

  • Pharmaceuticals: Used to synthesize nitrogen-containing heterocyclic intermediates for antibiotics and anti-tumor drugs. As a diamino building block, it enhances molecular diversity.

  • Pesticides: Used in the preparation of insecticides and fungicides containing furan rings, leveraging its biocompatibility and target selectivity.

  • Surfactants: Used to synthesize bio-based amphoteric/cationic surfactants for applications in daily chemicals, textiles, and water treatment.

5. Organic Synthesis and Catalysis

As a ligand or reagent, BAMF participates in organic reactions such as carbon-carbon bond formation and heterocyclic synthesis, serving laboratory R&D and custom synthesis of fine chemicals.

📈Application Value and Trends

The key advantages of BAMF lie in its bio-based origin and structural features of the furan ring, which reduce petroleum dependence and carbon footprint without significantly sacrificing performance.
It is currently under industrial exploration in bio-based polyamides, polyurethanes and epoxy curing agents. With global policy support and technological advances in bio-based materials, its applications in high-end manufacturing, electronics and pharmaceuticals will continue to expand.
